The first in Torn Label’s series of limited release beers brewed in collaboration with local artists, Lumber Lung was inspired by the work of Peter Warren, an acclaimed woodworker who built our tasting room. Drawing from Peter’s use of reclaimed wood, we salvaged a Missouri white oak tree that had fallen in Kansas City’s Valentine neighborhood, cut and charred it, and infused a brown ale base with the resulting toasted oak.
The finished product begins with inviting aromas of vanilla, cigar smoke, and black cherry. A deep chestnut hue accurately represents the immediate taste of woodsy caramel, coffee & cream, and black bread that rush to the tip of the tongue upon first sip, but subsequent notes of roasted chestnut and Speyside Scotch complement an unexpectedly intense range of flavors. A finish of sweet grain and an invigorating warmth end with a lip smacking richness.
